Fairy Tales: Lasting Influence On Attitudes Later In Life
[ send me this paper ]
5 pages in length. It is not difficult to realize that impressionable young girls are getting their first introduction to female relationships and sisterhood through a fairy tale that places sibling love and respect below all other aspects of a healthy relationship. Additionally, young readers are taught that the world is dominated by patriarchal figures to which women are not allowed to oppose, being forced to abide by the rules set down for them without making any fuss. Laurence Behrens and Leonard J. Rosen, authors of Writing and Reading Across the Curriculum, contend it is no wonder that young girls grow up into womanhood with a distorted impression of love, relationships and sisterhood, inasmuch as when they finally embark upon the real world, they are rudely awakened to the fact that life is nothing like it had been portrayed in the well-worn fairy tale Cinderella. Various vignettes throughout the book illustrate the manner by which this particular fairy tale gives young girls the wrong lesson about female relationships. No additional sources cited.

A 12 page overview of the societal changes which occurred during these two decades in regard to the relationships between men and women. Notes a number of factors combined to effect these changes. These were inclusive of the subservient role of women throughout history, inequalities in the workplace, and the perception of being bound into domesticity. Concludes that to judge the changes in gender roles which occurred during the 1960s is the same as judging any facet of human evolution. The relationship between men and women is no more static than any other aspect of our culture and society. Women had witnessed the breaking down of racial discrimination, and age-old attitudes about sexuality and other barriers, they were ready to implement equal changes in their own lives. Feminism and Judaism
[ send me this paper ]
