"The Crucible" Asks Difficult Questions
[ send me this paper ]
(5 pp) Is it some tragic theme, of humanity, that
needs to keep repeating itself--married man has an
affair with young girl, destruction follows? Or
does literature just reflect the consistent
foibles, or "the potholes" in the human road?
Arthur Miller makes the bad guys the heroes in his
1953 play the Crucible. We will look at this
reversal of morality in the characters of John
Proctor and Rebecca Nurse in this discussion.

Adultery Leads to Murder in Greek Tragedies
[ send me this paper ]
(6 pp). The question posed for our discussion is
how adultery leads to murder in Greek tragedies.
Yet it seems that an important component has been
left out of the equation: it is attitude on the
part of the male, which leads to his murder, as
much as does his breaking of his marriage vows
through adultery. Consequently we will examine
three Greek tragedies, Medea, Women of Trachis and
Agamemnon; to decipher the attitudes of the males
involved, and see if it influences their wives rage. Bibliography lists 4 sources.
