Falling / A Creative Story

A 6 page essay recounting the story of a construction worker's fall from the roof of a two-story warehouse. Previously laid off during an economic downturn in southern California, a resurgence resulted in his being recalled as a roofing foreman. Before the fall, he was intolerant and often verbally abusive toward the Spanish-speaking day laborers he managed. He begins his references to the workers as 'day laborers.' As he navigates his journey of personal discovery, those same people become the 'crew,' and finally, as they come to his aid, he refers to them as 'co-workers.' The foreman fully recovered, but only with a new appreciation of life.
